1.How long are the hunts? all hunts are 5 days. We expect our hunters to arrive Sunday afternoon, to give time to check the rifles. Hunt starts Mon. morning and ends Friday evening.
2.What is the best caliber of rifle to bring? We recommend rifles of .270 and up, our huge bodied bucks can go over 300lbs.so use contolled expansion type bullets such as Nosler Partions, Barnes X , Fail-Safe type PLEASE don't use Ballistic type rapid expansion bullets, our frozen brush is not user friendly!! A word to the wise: don't bring a rifle you just bought or borrowed or have never used or even loaded for that matter, bring a rifle you can load and unload in the dark, blindfolded!! one that you have hunted with before, AND PRACTISE !!!
3.What types of stands do you use? We use a variety of different stands mostly lock-on portables that I have custom built with large 14"x16" thick padded comfortable seats accessed by ladders, usual height is 16ft. to the base. Also we use a lot of various ground blinds with kitchen type chairs for seats and we have taken some of our biggest bucks from ground blinds.
4.Do you have heated stands? We can provide propane heat for some of our stands if the weather gets really cold,BUT WE DON'T RECOMMEND IT !! Why? because you are entering the forest world of the hardest animal to put in the record books, a mature whitetail buck knows everything in his world, I mean every sight ,sound and smell. After 40 years of huntin' them I know if you have a heater burning fuel he will smell it and he'll know something is not right in his world, that being said we recommend good quality hunting clothes that will keep you warm and comfortable to stay on stand all day long. We have had hunters as young as 12yrs. and as old as 82yrs. and with good clothes they have had no problem staying out all day.Contact us and we can recommend what is the best to bring.
5.When is the rut? Generally in our region peak rut is USUALLY around Nov. 16 to Nov. 20 depending on the weather. We have seen big mature bucks running does as early as Nov. 3 and we have had hunters on stand shoot bucks chasing does past them as late as Dec. 4, the weather has a lot to do with the rut intensity, the colder the weather the harder the bucks run, warm weather has a lot of the bucks running at night.
6.How far are the shots? All our hunting is from stands and the average shot is from 70yds. to 100yds.
7. What are your hunting methods? In the forested area where we hunt, the very best way to bushwhack a BIG ,mature, Saskatchewan Whitetail buck is stand hunting. The hunter should expect to sit on stand all day, as we take most of our bucks between 10A.M. and 2P.M. Of course we also do alot of grunting and rattling and this can be heart stopping action when that trophy buck charges in looking for a fight!
8. How many hunters do you take? We take a Maximum of 8 hunters per week during Whitetail season and 2 hunters per week during spring bear season, but we can make exception with advance notice.
9. What size of bucks can I expect to see in a week? Generally during a hunt, almost all of our hunters will see a buck in the 130 to 150 plus range. Many of our repeat hunters pass up huge, chocolate racked monsters scoring well in the 160's looking for the B&C class bucks that Saskatchewan is so famous for. These patient hunters sometimes go for a year or more before taking a buck, BUT when they do WOW!!! We highly encourage our hunters to only take big, mature bucks.Bucks that are heavy horned and are at least 4 years old, bucks that a hunter would be proud to have on his wall. Hunters who come up here to hunt with should realize that we are very serious about practising sound deer management for our bucks. If hunters only take mature deer, we can take the "cream of the crop" every year, but if we start shooting the young , soon to be trophy bucks, then there are no bucks to come up through the ranks.Repeatedly our most successfull hunters are ones who hunt to the last minute of the last day, the best way to ruin your chance of shooting a trophy Saskatchewan whitetail is to shoot a smaller buck early in the hunt. This may mean you may go home empty handed but you gave it your best shot. Not every hunter will be successfull but that's why they call it HUNTING and not SHOPPING, eh?
10. What will the weather be next year in November? Only God knows and he ain't talkin' !!But generally we will have approx. 4" -8" of snow and temps. of 40F for a high and 20F for a low.
11. How long have you been in business? We started outfitting full time in 1990, but I've held a Sask. Guide license since 1985. I was born and raised in Porcupine Plain and have spent 40 years hunting every specie of game this province has to offer.I spend countless hours in the bush, all year round always looking for BIG BUCK sign, if there is a big buck living in my area I will find him and come next deer season I'll have a hunter on stand waiting for him to make a mistake!!
12.Are your guides experienced hunters? Damn right!! all our guides are locals who have taken many trophy bucks themselves by bow and rifle and they know the country and where to find the BIG BUCKS for our clients.
